Navigation and selection tools in ZBrush

In this lesson, let's take a closer look at navigation in ZBrush.

Let's stretch the mesh we sculpted in the “Getting Started in ZBrush” tutorial on the canvas by clicking on it. Switch to the editing mode.

If you need to center the object, press the F key on the keyboard or the Frame button on the right.

In order to rotate the model, click on the viewport and pull without releasing the mouse button, the model will rotate.

In order to scale the model - hold down the Alt key, click, then release the Alt key and the model will be scaled. At first this process may be a bit difficult, but with a little practice you will get the hang of it.

If you need to move the model in the viewport, press Alt, click and move it.

To apply a mask on an object - press Ctrl, the cursor becomes yellow and you brush over the model, drawing a mask.

To remove the mask, simultaneously with Ctrl you need to press Alt and thus erase the mask.

You can soften the edge of the mask if you press Ctrl and click on it. The edge will become more blurred. Ctrl + Alt and click on the mask - the edge will become sharper.

To remove the mask completely - press Ctrl and click and drag the mouse cursor in the viewport.

To turn symmetry on or off, press the X key.

When working in ZBrush, you may need to hide some part of the model. A special brush is used for this purpose. There are two of them: rectangular and lasso (SelectRect and SelectLasso).

For example, select SelectRect, press Ctrl + Shift and drag the cursor in the viewport. A green rectangle appears. If you release Ctrl + Shift and press “space bar” you can move this area. Everything that falls within the area of the green rectangle will be visible, and everything outside of it will be hidden.

To invert visibility - press Ctrl + Shift, drag the cursor over the viewport, and the inverse side becomes visible.

If we want to work with visibility further, we can press Ctrl + Shift again and stretch the green rectangle.

If we want to hide a certain area, we press Alt in addition to Ctrl + Shift and the rectangle will turn red. Everything that falls into its area will be hidden.

While working, you may notice that it is possible to see through the back surface. To fix this, open the Tool menu and in the Display Properties tab activate or deactivate Double. Sometimes being able to see through the back surface makes your work much easier.

If you want to make the whole model visible, press Ctrl + Shift + click on the viewport.
